The paintings were comissioned in the 1870s to a large number of en-vogue artists of the day, such as Puvis de Chavannes, Galland, Bonnat, Cabanel, Lenepveu, Laurens and many others.
The paintings cover up the former window spots of the old church of Soufflot, and give the building its current flair of a darkened temple.
