Pompous Justice
1 Comments Published by Cedric Benetti on Tuesday, January 19, 2010 at 1/19/2010 01:04:00 PM.The titanic Brussels Palace of Justice was built between 1866 and 1883 in an eclectic style by Joseph Poelaert. The total cost of the construction, land and furnishings was about 50 million Belgian francs (the estimate of the project was a mere 5 million francs), which was the amount of one entire year of the public buildings budget of Belgium.
It was the biggest building constructed in the 19th century and is bigger than St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. It was the biggest structure in Europe until Ceasescu built the Palace of the People in Bucharest in the 1980s.

Adolf Hitler was tremendously fond of the building and, in collaboration with Albert Speer, based several of the monumental buildings of the Nazi era on the design of the court.
