Built in 1882 by architect Paul Sédille in order to replace the first buildings that got partially destroyed in a fire in 1881. The new buildings were, according to architecture historians, the first prototype of the department store in its modern day form, with a grand interior display of open spaces and monumental staircases, unfortunately gone for good nowadays.
The renovation work will continue until 2010, but the parts on Boulevard Haussmann have already been revealed for a couple of weeks now and shine in all their grandeur like a beacon for shopaholics all over Paris.
