SARKONOMICS

or how to be "présidentiable"

lesson 1:

Don*t let ANYONE insult you!
(video with Sarko getting screamed at / "enculé" = fucker, asshole, wanker)

lesson 2:

Insult people who insult you! Use BIG-BOY words to feel lika someone important and impress your nation.
(video with Sarko insulting a guy who didn*t want to shake his hand ("don*t touch me, you make me dirty") with strong big-boy language ( "casse toi pauvre con" = get lost you poor moron/cunt)

PARIS STREET VIEW finally on GOOGLE MAPS?

How long will we have to wait until Paris is finally google-able on street view?
Reports of Google cars in the streets of Paris became frequent since last October, but so far no news from Google on when the first European cities will finally make their appearance ...

Let*s hope the below picture will soon become a frequent view for our fellow googlers from around the world!

Evacuate the Louvre! The Germans are comming!

In 1937/38 as WWII was about to break out, Louvre director Jacques Jaujard decided to evacuate the museums collections. Most of the pieces got evacuated except for the biggest ones, which were protected by sand bags in the galleries.
The artworks got sent away, at first to the castle of Chambord, then moved around different castles on numerous occasions in a quite confusing way to keep the German enemy confused.
The emptied museum reopened under the occupation, mostly showing copies of the originals.

moving the paintings out of the second floor
evacuating the victory of Samothracy over the stairs

the emptied galeries only bearing the frames

Zaha Hadid and the lost Louvre

These are the views of Zaha Hadid*s entry to the competition of creating a new space for the Islamic arts department. Unfortunately Hadid*s entry was not the winner, supposedly because it may have looked too extreme to the more conservative Louvre people, so a more "standardised" design was chosen in the end.

The Louvre*s collection of Islamic art is currently displayed on the lower ground floor of the Richelieu wing, in a very cramped and ridiculously small space, but will be transferred to newly created display areas in the Cour Visconti (Denon wing) over the next 5 years.

The Louvre, like the Metropolitan Museum in New York, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, holds one of the most important Islamic Art collections in the world. The adjacent Decorative Arts museum owns another 3,000 objects that have not been shown in public for over 20 years. The 2 collections will come together in a two-story, 36,000 square-foot design by Milanese architect Mario Bellini and Rudy Ricciotti, a French architect.

Set to open in 2009, the $67 million project benefited from a $20 million donation from Saudi Prince Walid bin Talal.

BLING BLING SARKOZY

It*s Sarkoy on official state visit in Romania earlier this week, apparently still as attracted as ever to all things shiny and golden. Watch him drooling with lust on a shiny Romanian pen before he takes it away. Just what is it with this guy and his obsession with the bling?

PARIS - THEN and NOW

This new blog section has been on my mind for a certain time now. I finally found a way to put my huge collection of vintage Paris pictures to a good use. Now you*ll find me in the streets restaging the right angles to make old and new match.
Now obviously Paris hasn*t changed much over the last century, the only differences might be the transportation vehicles and the differently clothed people walking around.

from SKYLINE to BORDERLINE

It*s a beautiful day for a little stroll through the musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, especially since it boasts one of the best views onto the skyline of Paris and the Tuileries gardens at its feet.

Me in the elevator. It*s shiny, therefore I like it. No elevator music so far though.

The musée des Arts Décoratifs is having a little exhibition called "Comix", where cartoon artists are invited to create installations on the theme of a toy selected in the museums collections, mixed with their own creations.

One of my favorites is the stamp wall by Sardon, depicting a bizarre world of little wooden showcases, bearing a certain resemblance to a 19th century curiosity shop.

Palais de Tokyo à la folie

I love the old buildings of the Palais de Tokyo constructed for the International Exhibition of Arts and Technology of 1937. Its covered in bas-reliefs by Alfred Janniot, and presents a bronze statue by Antoine Bourdelle depicting France, overlooking a big reflecting pool. But the days of glory have passed and the reflecting pool looks like a dump and most of the surrounding piazzas and terraces are now left to the skaters, who call this place 'le dome'. I prefer it that way, it is one of the last places where you can still find peace and quiet, and sit on the enormous terrace café with stunning view onto the Eiffel Tower and the riverfront...

PARIS POTPOURRI

    Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
I am Cedric, discoverer of things that would go unnoticed in the streets of Paris, historic haven of fashionistas and city of lights ('lights' as in 'enlightenment', not street lights).
But seriously: I'm an expat from Luxembourg (the country, not the garden), living in the center of Paris (hence 'Paris 2nd arrondissement'), and currenlty studying architectural history...
