POPE-SHOW in PARIS
0 Comments Published by Cedric Benetti on Friday, September 12, 2008 at 9/12/2008 02:58:00 AM.The big day has finally arrived when we, the people of Paris, are blessed with the visit of the pontif...well rather messed than blessed.
Closing down half of the city traffic and public transportation system just for some old white guy who gets driven around waving in a fishtank is not really my idea of a traffic stopper, but then again, Paris is a bit like Disneyland, and people here haven't seen a good parade in quite some time.
Not since that memorable fourteenth-of-july parade when someone attempted to shoot the president has there been such an enthousiasm in wearing awful t-shirts saying "B XVI PARIS" (quite confusing isn't it!). Let's hope Madonna will make a better attempt later this fall when she gives her concert here, and beat the expected 250 000 religious fanatics that will try and fit their pious posterior into Notre Dame cathedral or onto the Invalides esplanade for a mass-mass!
Now, obviously, I'm not a religious person, I only enjoy the religious architecture for my part, but seeing the pope is just something like a historic milestone. Like seeing Elvis a last time before he dies, minus the banana-split sandwiches. So come-on down tomorrow with your lawnchair, grab a pope action figure and get a t-shirt and have a beer and some nuts while you enjoy total traffic chaos downtown. Paris at its best!
I'll be there tomorrow and try to capture some of that "pope dust" for you.
